It is against the law to throw yard and garden waste in the trash
Yard waste includes:
Alternatives for Handling Yard Waste
1. Compost at home
- Leave grass clippings on lawn.
- Compost is a beneficial soil amendment.
- Composting is easy to do at home.
2. Bring to Southern Minnesota Construction compost site
- There is no cost for Mankato, non-commercial residents.
- Separate woody waste from compostable materials.
- Located at 57032-231st Lane, Mankato (one mile north of Highway 14 and the Third Avenue intersection)
- Hours of operation:
April 1-October 31, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
November 1- November 15, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
November 16-March 31, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
*The facility is closed on the following holidays: Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

3. Curbside Collection (extra charge)
- Residents must purchase special Mankato yard waste collection bags located at the "downtown" Cub and Hy-vee. They cost 75 cents per bag and are the only compost bags accepted by Waste Management.
- Woody waste must be cut to four foot lengths, bundled and tied, put in a yard waste collection bag.
- Put out bags or bundle on recycling collection day.
- Yard waste is picked up April through mid-November on the same day as recycling pickup.
Holiday trees are picked up from local parks in January.
