Mankato's Volunteer Firefighter Program

Applications are currently not being accepted.

Mankato offers two unique volunteer firefighter programs:
* The non-resident program is for community members who spend several nights per month staffing the stations.

* The resident program is for members who live at the fire station and staff in exchange for rent.

The primary differences between the programs is the staffing requirements. Other requirements and benefits of the program are the same.

You are welcome to tour our facilities, spend some time riding the engines or ask follow-up questions. Call (507) 387-8703 for more information.

Mankato Fire
The Mankato Department of Public Safety has a combination fire department that consists of 18 full-time staff and 39 volunteer firefighters, operating out of two stations. Of the volunteers, 9 are residents who live at one of the fire stations and 30 are non-residents who are community members who staff several nights per month.

The combination full-time/volunteer makeup provides good service to the community at a reasonable cost. Six commanders provide leadership and supervision in areas such as incident command, fire prevention and education, investigations, training and the maintenance of stations and equipment. Full-time firefighters provide the expertise in training, inspections, investigations and hazardous material responses. Volunteers provide the needed staffing, primarily at night, to handle fire, medical and other emergency calls for service.
