Quality Neighborhoods
First Day of School Going to the
Bus by Rachel Bennett, Mankato

All citizens should enjoy their neighborhoods and homes. Mankato’s city code has ordinances that affect the visual appearances of its neighborhoods, how to report code violations and violation consequences.

Ordinances have been established to help maintain Mankato’s quality of life. If interested in developing a neighborhood organization to preserve and protect the neighborhood you live in, call (507) 387-8722.

Nuisance Hotline

  • Garbage containers left on curbs
  • Garbage or junk complaints
  • Inoperable vehicles or parking on lawns
  • Long or unkempt lawns or lots
  • Noise
  • Rental unit concerns

Please leave a name, phone number and address for any follow-up questions.

Garbage and Yard Maintenance

  • Accumulation of vehicle parts, tires, scrap lumber, construction materials, old appliances, furniture, leaves and branches, to name a few, in a yard is in violation of the city code.
  • Keep furniture designed for indoor use indoors instead of in a yard or unenclosed porch.
  • Weeds and grass cannot exceed 12 inches or be allowed to go to seed.
  • Noxious weeds and brush piles are prohibited.

To report a violation call (507) 387-8617.

Neighborhood Parking

  • Vehicles can be parked in the same place on city streets for a maximum of 24 hours.
  • Streets are for public use and vehicles can be parked in any legal parking place along them. It is not illegal for someone to park in front of your house. Everyone is encouraged to be courteous about parking places.
  • Park vehicles four feet from driveway entrances. It is illegal to block driveways and sidewalks at any time (including your own).
  • Park vehicles so they are facing the correct direction.
  • Vehicles may not be parked on front or side yards at any time.

To report any of the above, call 911.

Public Nuisance Ordinances

Ordinances were established to remedy constant issues at properties. A property is considered a problem when ordinances are violated on a regular basis, others are disturbed or the property creates a hazard to public health and safety.
