Planning, Zoning and Inspections

Planning, Zoning and Inspections promote and regulate development, tax base diversity and orderly and efficient community growth. Staff reviews zoning requests, proposed subdivisions and annexations and prepares the city for change.

Permits and Building Inspections

A building permit is required when a building is built, reconstructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished. They are also needed for fence and deck construction. A plumbing permit may also be required. For more information call (507) 387-8614 or (507) 387-8635.

Building inspectors inspect existing buildings and new construction for conformity to the Uniform Building Code and other regulations. Inspections include identifying hazardous conditions, structural failure or improper use. Inspectors assist builders and the public with building codes and regulations. They also address outdoor storage, excess garbage, junk vehicles, graffiti and similar concerns to keep Mankato looking its best. Appropriate action is taken where code violations are identified.
