Active projects for Information Technology

Communication Infrastructure Upgrades (Fiber)

This is a joint effort with the City of Mankato, Blue Earth County, Scott County and the State of Minnesota to gain “high speed” connectivity to the east and south areas of the city. This will connect the new Blue Eart County Justice Center, existing Minnesota Department of Transportation building (planned site for Mankato Public Works Department), and Fire Station #3.

Intranet - Deployment of Microsoft Sharepoint

Over the next year information technology staff will redesigned the city's Intranet site using Microsoft SharePoint. The new framework will unify city employees via the office and those working in the field.  The new Intranet site will streamline city processes and give staff a tool to access and share information.

Unified Storage Area Network

Implement a unified file storage area network between city hall and the law enforcement center to minimize overhead and improve access to information.

Expansion to the Security Camera System

Mankato's video security system is being expanded to broaden coverage in the downtown area, Sibley Park, and the new Riverfront Park.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

Mankato is in the final year of a three-year phased approach to build an enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) system. The GIS system will integrate all department databases graphically to improve efficiency of data management, analysis and information delivery.  Mankato's area business, citizens, and visiting customers will gain improved information accessibility and communication.

City Website Enhancements

Mankato's web pages serve as an important communication tool to strengthen citizen connections to city government.  New features include videos of community promotional topics, special events, and major agenda topics from City Council meetings, and expanding the City's e-commerce applications, such as all fee based transactions, parking tickets, licenses, and building permit applications.

City Wide Voice over IP Telephone System

Mankato is planning a three-year staged rollout of a voiceover telephone system (VoIP). This network-based phone system will integrate systems to improve efficiency.

Citizen Feedback Application

Staff is currently developing a citizen feedback application. This will give the city opportunities to make Mankato a better place by improving city responsiveness and accountability to citizens. Integration with the website and streamlining the internal workflow processes will help Mankato staff deliver a higher level of customer service.
